Create a free personal academic website in 5 minutes

This guide will show you how to create a free personal academic website in just 5 minutes.

1. Visit Owlstown.

Visit Owlstown at https://www.owlstown.com. Click on the Get started button at the top-right corner.

2. Follow the onboarding process.

Start the onboarding process by click on the Let's get started button.

The onboarding process has 3 steps. Each step is optional.

  1. Enter your full name.

  2. Add some details by entering your position, department, and institution.

  3. Select your favorite color.

We will use the information you shared to start your website. You can edit your website further using the Owlstown Editor.

3. Use the Owlstown Editor.

Your website is now created. A preview of it appears on the right side of the Owlstown Editor. You'll notice that your website is currently barebones. Use the Owlstown Editor to add more content to it.

The Owlstown editor is organized into 4 parts: Profile, Content, Design, and Config.

During onboarding, each part has a checklist of things to add to your website. You can hide this checklist anytime.

Describe yourself

Click on Describe yourself in the checklist under Profile.

On the About screen, click on the Edit content button. This will open up the Content Editor.

The Content Editor looks like this.

Refer to the Content blocks page to learn about the types of blocks you can add to your content.

Add site picture

Click on Add site picture in the checklist under Profile.

On the Site picture screen (left side of the Owlstown Editor), click on the area Click to select a picture. Upload a picture of yourself, your lab, or a logo.

The preview on the right side will update with the picture you selected.

4. Create an Owlstown account to save your website.

You have 14 days to create an Owlstown account to save your website.

Click on Sign up for an account in the checklist under Config.

On the Sign up screen, enter your email, password, and password confirmation.

Congratulations!

Yay, you created an academic website in a matter of minutes!

Other things to do

Import your publications

Click on Add publications in the checklist under Content.

On the Publications screen (left side of the Owlstown Editor), click on the Import button.

On the Import publications screen, enter a search query, e.g., Albert Einstein. Then click the Find publications button.

For each publication that you want to import, click on the Import button.

Edit subdomain

This feature requires that you sign up for an Owlstown account.

Click on Edit subdomain in the checklist under Config.

On the Subdomain screen, click on the Edit subdomain button.

Enter your preferred subdomain on the Subdomain field. The click on the Update button.
